Introduction To Traditional Medicine
» Introduction
"This program is run jointly with NQ's affiliate, Child Family Health International. All information below was taken from CFHI's website, and may have been updated. Please check CFHI's website, www.cfhi.org, for up-to-date information."

This program is for students interested in various health care systems in India. The course is designed to introduce students to the philosophies behind traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Homeopathy, yoga, meditation, and other mind and body systems. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the history and philosophy of these systems and be able to rotate with traditional medicine practitioners to gain first hand clinical experience in these areas.

Students participating in this program will gain four weeks of practical experience in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings that use Ayurveda, Naturopathy, & Homeopathy and Allopathic systems. They will also receive classes in yoga and meditation.

» Clinical Sites
The following are few hospitals and clinics as sample of possible rotations during this program. Restrictions may apply for pre-clinical, and pre-medical students. Rotation availability depends on local conditions.

Than Gaon Rural Clinic :
For a week during the program, students will live in a small rural community located in the village of Than Gaon. Here, students will spend one week living and working with a local physician. The focus will be on primary care and preventative medicine. Students will also go on hikes around the mountains and learn about the medicinal plants of the area. They will work in the Than Gaon village clinic and participate in informal workshops on home remedies. This is a great opportunity to experience village life and health care in a rural area.

Parmarth Nikethan Ashram, Rishikesh :
This is an ashram hospital for the poor that offers free Ayurvedic healthcare services. People come from miles to get services here, because it is free and it is a spiritual place as well. You will be able to go on regular rounds here and observe and work with trained Ayurvedic physicians. During your time at this site in Rishikesh, you will stay in rooms at the ashram itself.

Dr. Nisha Gera Nursing Home :
Dr. Nisha Gera is an Ob/Gyn who runs her own clinic serving women only. Due to cultural issues and traditions, male CFHI participants are not able to rotate at this site. It is a private facility with both outpatient and inpatient facilities. Three students may rotate here at a time.

Vaish Nursing Home :
Dr. Vipin Vaish is a pediatrician who runs his own neonatal and pediatric hospital in Dehra Dun. This facility serves middle- and low-income families. It is a private facility that is very popular with CFHI participants. Four students may rotate at this clinic.

Dr. Rakesh Kalra is a plastic surgeon in Dehra Dun. His wife, an Ob/Gyn, shares a clinic with him. With Dr. Kalra, you will work with him during preoperative and postoperative consultations as well as surgeries.

All rotations are subject to change depending on local availability. Local coordinators will make alternate arrangements if a particular activity or facility is not available during the program month.
