Infectious Disease In Mumbai
» Introduction
"This program is run jointly with NQ's affiliate, Child Family Health International. All information below was taken from CFHI's website, and may have been updated. Please check CFHI's website, www.cfhi.org, for up-to-date information."

CFHI offers a four-week elective in Mumbai (Bombay), India for medical students. This exciting new program offers students first hand clinical exposure to the realities of tropical disease and their treatments in both urban and rural settings. Students (if more than three) will attend lectures about common tropical diseases such as Malaria, Leishmaniasis, and Dengue fever, which will be supplemented with clinical experience in hospitals in and around Mumbai.

» Clinical Sites
The following are few hospitals and clinics as sample of possible rotations during this program. Restrictions may apply for pre-clinical and pre-medical students. Rotation availability depends on local conditions.

Mumbai Municipal TB Hospital :
This is a specialty hospital that deals only in tuberculosis cases. At any given time there are over 500 TB patients at this location. The hospital is a big facility that covers over 7 buildings. Students will have a chance to study TB, receive lectures, and rotate in the wards and the outpatient clinics.

Leprosy Hospital :

The local government in Mumbai runs this 18-acre hospital completely devoted to leprosy cases. Here students will see leprosy cases, receive lectures and be able to visit a leprosy museum. At any given time there are over 200 leprosy patients at this location.

Infectious Disease Hospital :

Students will rotate at a tertiary hospital for infectious diseases. Here they will have the opportunity to study cases in Malaria, TB, typhoid, hepatitis A and C, and a variety of parasitic infections.

Slum Clinics :
CFHI also partners with two small clinics run in the extremely poor areas of Mumbai. These are located in the slums where majority of the urban poor live. These clinics are very small and run by an individual doctor and assistant. Main focus here will be on primary care.

All rotations are subject to change depending on local availability and upon general Indian holidays. Local coordinators will do their best to make alternate arrangements if a particular activity or facility is not available during the program month.
